HA7 Task 1 - Applications of 3D

How 3D is used in different industries

Games

Video game industry are one of the main industries that uses 3D primarily. Majority of the games today are made using 3D engines because of the technology being so accessible for almost every developer. Even plat formers are made from using 3D to give the game depth rather than using a 2D engine and making adding different layers of pictures to add more depth.this is likely due to the development of increasingly powerful GPU processing and through techniques that allow artists to make 3D objects easier and faster with more detail. Shown below is one of the best 3D engines that made award wining games like Crysis and arch age.

Level Design

"Level design is a game development discipline that involves the creation of video game levels, locales, missions or stages. This is done using some sort of level editor - software used in game development to construct digital environments."

Level design is a crucial part of a game, the way the level is layed out can impact the performance of the game as well as the game play specially in multiplayer games. Competitive games like counter strike heavily relies on how the level is layed out for their game play. The lay out of the level also determines the pace of the game and how often does players interact with each other. Shown below is the level designer's process of building a map or a level,

3D Modelling and Animation

3D modelling is done by artists who work on virtual 3D objects. In a games studio working environment. Film maker, designers architects etc uses 3D modelling to create animations, games, virtual models etc. In a games related work place a 3D modelling artists does all the 3D models and then send it to the level designer to use assets to the level. Artists use many types of methods to model such as extrusion modelling, box modelling, and polygonal modelling.

Animation is the creation of moving images using computer technology. There are two categories of computer animation. Computer generated animation is designed solely on the computer system using animation and 3D graphics software, and computer-assisted animation where traditional animations are computerized. Animation has the power to give life to plain blank objects by injecting energy and emotions into them. The idea behind animation is to play Images "frames" really fast to fool the human eye into thinking its a video that shows motion. Animation can make a group of still images come to life.

When animating the animators have to go through a process of rigging these models using bones and these setting the bones up to move with  parts of the 3D model within frames to create character movement in animations.

3D Models get combined with animation to create game cut-scenes, Cut scenes are used to tell a story within the game. One of he best games I've seen this done by is The last of us, They integrated custcenes into the game play engine which let your interact within the cut scene.

Animations are also used in game for in game animations for all games, it could be an animation for walking, jumping, running etc. Any scripted movement in the game is an animation. One of the best games I've seen in game animation done right is Overwatch. This game is well polished has the most subtle animations that gives the characters their own personalities and styles.

TV

3D technology is been vastly used in the movies industry by companies such as pixar and disney to make movies like toy story, monsters inc, frozen etc. These movies are fully 3D animated from the characters to the environments. Movies also uses 3D in the form of CGI which adds 3D pictures to the real world, Movies like Jurassic park, Godzilla and Avatar uses this tehcnology to add characters or other environmental objects using the CGI technology which is also a form of 3D. Fast and furious 7 used recently used this technology to continue with there movie after on of their main actors passed away while they were filming.

The film industry also uses 3D technology to make animation movies such as Finding Nemo, Kungfu Panda and Bugs Life. These type of movies has now become one of the leading type of movie genres because of it's appeal to children and nostalgic adults. Movie companies such as Dream Works and Pixar has been built upon this technology and all the their movies uses 3D graphics for their movies. Shown below is an example of a very popular 3D movie made only using computers.

Education

3D technology has been used in education since the 1960s,he use of 3D in the classroom has been greatly increased in the past 12 months and offers enormous potential as a tool in teaching and learning.Digital 3D geological models allow students to visualise geology, they reinforce spatial skills, facilitate student recognition of pre-learnt geological principles in the field and encourage students to think about geological processes and properties. 3D technology is also been used for educating medical students by creating models of human organs so they can examine what each part looks like using the 3D application.

Medicine

The video below shows how 3D technology is been used for medicine. Also in medicine there are new developments were 3D printing has come into place where doctors can use this technology to print prosthetic arms and legs. Researchers has also found technology suing the power of 3D printing now to make tissues with blood vessels which when popular will be one of the marvels of medicine.

Engineering

Video below shows how 3D can be used for constructions and engineering, In this video the person explains what is in his design and we can see how we can use the 3D technology is produce such detailed design that would greatly help engineers manufacture the vehicle. This makes it easier for the designer to present his full design of the 3D car without holding back anything because the technology is available to present all the ideas. The video below shows how a engineer designed a car with all the little details that would would help a manufacturer build it easily.

Architecture

3D is one of the main assets of architects in the present day, almost all architects use 3D softwars like CAD, Lumion and Google Sketchup to present their designs. This is mainly used when designing houses, interior and exterior. Some of the more experienced and advanced architects will present a design with a walk though so you can actually know what the it would look like before it is built, you would get the chance to see it as you were walking through it. Architects uses 3D software to create high detailed environment and housing to shown clients an idea of what the finished product will look like. It has now become common practice to make a 3D interactive level or a walk through of any building plan.

The video below shows a walk though of a house design by an architect using a 3D application.

Product design

Product design is widely used for designing products in wide range of categories such as food, beauty products, toys etc. shown below is a video that shows you how product designers use 3D to design products. Product design has also benefited from 3D printing, many products has started to adopt 3D printing technology today.
